Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa Scholarship Program

The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, in partnership with the private sector, the Boys and Girls Club of Ontario and the Ottawa Police Service, provides over $70,000 in academic assistance each year to over 25 recipients.

Awards are available to non-members, current or past members, volunteers and current part-time employees (who were past members) of the Club.

The BGCO Scholarship Program is intended to recognize youth for their community effort, involvement and participation with the Club, academic success and financial need.

Doing good for others during difficult times in one’s own life requires particularly outstanding commitment. This is why, as part of the selection process, the personal circumstances and/or challenges of each applicant will be considered.

In 2010, 26 young people received scholarships. You can be the next one!

Future Shop Scholarship

The Post-Secondary Scholarship program supported by Future Shop is currently undergoing a redesign phase, and as such Future Shop has asked us to develop a new model that will provide incentives to high school students to consider and plan for post-secondary education in their future.

To help with the transition from the old format to the new one, Future Shop will continue to offer 25 post-secondary scholarships during the 2010/2011 academic year! 2010 will mark the tenth consecutive year that Future Shop will be providing post-secondary scholarships to Boys and Girls Club members across the country. These scholarships assist youth in pursuing and accomplishing their educational goals, as they grow to become the leaders of tomorrow!

Each scholarship is valued at $4,000 and will consist of $3,000 in tuition to the post-secondary institution of the youth’s choice as well as a $1,000 Future Shop gift card to assist with the recipients studies!

In order to be eligible an applicant must be a current or former Boys and Girls Club member for a minimum of one-year, and be no more than 24 years of age at the time of application. Brian Smith Memorial Scholarships

The Brian Smith Memorial Scholarship was established in 1996 in memory of CJOH-TV Ottawa sportscaster Brian Smith, who was shot and killed as he left the TV station on August 1st, 1995. The Scholarship pays tribute to Brian Smith's

work in the Ottawa Community, and is intended to fund recipients who will serve as a model for other young people in the community. The award was created to promote, encourage and sponsor promising individuals who would otherwise experience extreme hardship in pursuing a post-secondary education.

Brian (Smitty) always believed that education and access to sports and recreation were essential to the development of all children, no doubt influenced by his association with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa. Brian attended Camp Minwassin as a camper where he was recognized as both the Most Courteous Camper and as the Best Athlete.  Brian benefited from the Boys and Girls Club’s leadership training and went on to be a camp counselor.

The Boys and Girls Club renamed their camp to Camp Smitty in 2001 to honour Brian’s work in the Ottawa community.

Award Details:

The Brian Smith Memorial Scholarships are funded by the Bank of America and provide funding for two students graduating from high school in the Ottawa area to attend any university or college in the City of Ottawa. One student will receive $5,000 while a second student will receive $2,500. The award winners will be invited to attend the Annual Brian Smith Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on July 13, 2010.
