Volunteer Program

Volunteer

Welcome to the Boys and Girls of Ottawa and thank you for your interest in volunteering with us.

For well over 84 years the Club has benefited from the incredible energy of volunteers. Past members are constantly letting us know how important the Club was to them as they grew up. Of course the Club offers some incredible recreation facilities, but it was the people that made the difference, and continue to make a difference in the lives of young people. Experts in the field tell us that one of the most important elements in a young person's healthy development is the role of a positive adult. Parents, teachers and our own staff are important, but a great volunteer can sometimes have an incredible impact.

We invite you to explore the opportunities outlined on our website, and we encourage you to visit with us to learn more about how you can help change lives.

The Importance of Volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa
The Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa has served the Ottawa community for over 84 years, reaching out to 4,500 children and youth each year through after-school, weekend and summer programs that build self-esteem and help to develop stronger social skills.
The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa believes in involving volunteers in an effective and meaningful way. Our volunteer opportunities are designed to create an experience that is rewarding to the volunteer, to the organization and most importantly, to our members. Volunteer involvement with our organization is essential to ensure the delivery of effective and supportive programs. Volunteers make a difference in the lives of our members. Get involved and help make a difference in someone’s life!
Volunteer opportunities

Volunteer involvement with our organization is essential to ensure the delivery of effective and supportive programs.

The volunteer opportunities are designed to create an experience that is rewarding to the volunteer, to the organization and most importantly, to our members, the children.

There are several ways that volunteers are involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa:

Clubhouse Volunteering

Volunteers are involved in our clubhouses providing program support and working directly with our members.

These volunteer opportunities require a minimum commitment of one shift per week (about 2 hours). The schedule varies depending of the program schedule of each clubhouse.

The requirements of these positions are mainly to participate and provide support in the activity with the youth and staff. Such opportunities include assisting with Homework Club, Sports, Art program, Computer Room access, Games Room Activities, Recreational Activities and other programs running at the clubhouse.

Student Volunteering

Volunteer opportunities exist for students who are currently involved in a college or university programs that require a placement as part of their curriculum. The placement opportunities available at the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa focus mainly on program support at the clubhouses, but are dictated by the requirements of the placement and the needs of our organization.

High school students requiring 40 hours of volunteer service have some options too (clubhouse volunteering, special events and sometimes administration support).

Direct Program Delivery Volunteering

Some people have the talent and experience to directly deliver a program.

An example is “Lights, Camera, Action”, an innovative and exciting program offered to our members by three dedicated volunteers with expertise and knowledge about the creation and production in creative media.

If you have any ideas that you think might make an interesting and creative learning opportunity for our members, please contact us.

Employer Supported Volunteering

Many companies or corporations provide opportunities for their employees to volunteer at an organization like ours. This is a great team-building opportunity and enables the employees to participate in an activity during their business hours.

Employer Supported Volunteer opportunities generally take place during hours when the clubhouses are not open to our members. Activities can include preparing healthy snacks for members, cleaning and/or painting a facility, flyer distribution in local communities, gardening and landscaping, and other opportunities you could propose.

Special Event Volunteering

BGCO hosts a variety of special events throughout the year to raise funds for our programs as well as community awareness about our organization and the programs and services we provide. This volunteer opportunity is on an on-call basis and requires a commitment of any where from a few days a year to attending every event, depending on the interests of the volunteer.

If we do not have the opportunities you are looking for, you might want to contact Volunteer Ottawa, your local volunteer centre, to be connected with an organization that will have current opportunities.

Testimonials

Quotes about volunteering - from volunteers in all areas.

"The reason I chose to volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club was because of their commitment to their members, and the support that these youth receive, which allows them to perform to the best of their abilities. The staff and volunteers are friendly, energetic, and always willing to help in any way they can. But the best part of it all is the members. It's a great sense of satisfaction when you see the smiles and energy coming from these kids!"

Greg – Clubhouse volunteer, Britannia
"Every fall the Capital City Chorus does repairs, painting and new construction for a simple reason--We love the end result of betterment for the boys and girls club and the particular weekend is a wonderful time of fellowship, harmony and bonding for us as a chorus."

Thomas Burns - Capital City Chorus
"Being a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club gives me a chance to be a positive role model for the kids that attend the club. Being able to help them with their decisions, from school work to simple life choices, is very rewarding. I really enjoy helping out the members with sports, computers and homework projects. It’s a great feeling to see them succeed with their challenges. The Boys and Girls Club give children a safe, friendly and positive environment to hang out in and enjoy life."

Bill - Clubhouse volunteer, Britannia
The kids give me so much attention! The staff give me so much support! I am as happy and secure at the Club as the members are. I've taught teenage boys how to peel carrots, I've learned a new dance step, and I'm routinely trounced at pool by seven-year-olds. The Boys and Girls Club has really helped to fill the void left when my daughter went to university.

Kate – Clubhouse volunteer, Britannia
The boys and girls club is a great place to gain experience working with youth. It's a fun environment, and you are always supported by top quality staff. The wide variety of programs gives you the chance to supervise an activity that you are already comfortable with.
