Integration
Welcome to the Integration Program at the Boys and Girls Club of
Over the last several years the Integration program has evolved into a unique and innovative program that caters to children looking to develop pro-social skills. Guided by the understanding that certain individuals struggle to make healthy choices in terms of behaviour, in the unstructured environment of our clubhouses, the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa has tailored its integration programs to meet this need. This exceptional initiative is driven by an effort to make all children Belong, Believe and Achieve. Laura Jones Manager-Integration There are three main programs offered under Integration which can be explored in detail on our website. Planting Seeds Summer Day Camp The Planting Seeds Social Skills Summer Day Camp focuses on developing social skills in a fun and innovative day camp setting. The primary goal of the camp is to help participants build on pre-existing pro-social skills, improve healthy behaviour and increase participation in recreational and social activities. Areas of focus include but are not limited to: dealing with frustration, problem solving and healthy competition, understanding feelings, honesty and self empowerment. Other topics that are introduced are listening, recognizing stress, reading social cues and learning relaxation techniques. Everyday at camp a new social skill is introduced and then practiced through-out the day through recreation, art and interactive activities. The Planting Seeds Day Camp runs for 3, two-week sessions (10 week days) during the summer. The camp is runs from 9:00am to 4:00pm out of the Fred C. McCann Clubhouse which is situated at Planting Seeds Day Camp Testimonials Quotes from parents: "This is an excellent day camp for our young children. This is a result of the great opportunities he has had with this camp!" J "We really appreciate all the help you gave our son; he's improved thanks to you. You are an excellent mentor. Thanks." The S.I.G.N.S Program (Supporting Individuals in Gaining New Skills)
This program is an eight-week program created and designed to meet the needs of children aged 6-12 years who are looking to develop pro-social skills. The S.I.G.N.S program consists of 1 hour of social skill development and 1 hour of Boys and Girls Clubhouse activities and is run out of the various BGC Clubhouses. Each S.I.G.N.S program accommodates six children (one staff to three participant ratio) who have been referred to the program by BGC Managers, teachers, parents/guardians or partnering agencies. All of the participants of the program are in need of development in some social skill area. Many have a clinical diagnosis (predominately ADHD) but this is not necessary to participate in the program. During the social skill development hour, children learn the development tools necessary to enhance their social skills. These development tools are taught through interactive games, role playing, discussion, art activities and recreation. They are then reinforced through practice. Supported Participation
This program is provided to those individuals who require more assistance than is typically provided in an unstructured environment. The goal of this program is to support individuals who would like to participate in the Boys and Girls Club but are unable to do so without (initial) extra support (for example those who struggle understanding the boundaries/rules of the Club, those who struggle with social anxiety in unfamiliar environments, those who find the unstructured environment too stimulating which often leads to poor behaviour choices, etc.). Space in the Supported Participation program is extremely limited as it provides temporary one to one support until a member feels comfortable and confident to operate within the Clubhouse unassisted.
