Volunteer opportunities
Volunteer involvement with our organization is essential to ensure the delivery of effective and supportive programs.
The volunteer opportunities are designed to create an experience that is rewarding to the volunteer, to the organization and most importantly, to our members, the children.
There are several ways that volunteers are involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa:
Clubhouse Volunteering
Volunteers are involved in our clubhouses providing program support and working directly with our members.
These volunteer opportunities require a minimum commitment of one shift per week (about 2 hours). The schedule varies depending of the program schedule of each clubhouse.
The requirements of these positions are mainly to participate and provide support in the activity with the youth and staff. Such opportunities include assisting with Homework Club, Sports, Art program, Computer Room access, Games Room Activities, Recreational Activities and other programs running at the clubhouse.
Student Volunteering
Volunteer opportunities exist for students who are currently involved in a college or university programs that require a placement as part of their curriculum. The placement opportunities available at the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa focus mainly on program support at the clubhouses, but are dictated by the requirements of the placement and the needs of our organization.
High school students requiring 40 hours of volunteer service have some options too (clubhouse volunteering, special events and sometimes administration support).
Direct Program Delivery Volunteering
Some people have the talent and experience to directly deliver a program.
An example is “Lights, Camera, Action”, an innovative and exciting program offered to our members by three dedicated volunteers with expertise and knowledge about the creation and production in creative media.
If you have any ideas that you think might make an interesting and creative learning opportunity for our members, please contact us.
Employer Supported Volunteering
Many companies or corporations provide opportunities for their employees to volunteer at an organization like ours. This is a great team-building opportunity and enables the employees to participate in an activity during their business hours.
Employer Supported Volunteer opportunities generally take place during hours when the clubhouses are not open to our members. Activities can include preparing healthy snacks for members, cleaning and/or painting a facility, flyer distribution in local communities, gardening and landscaping, and other opportunities you could propose.
Special Event Volunteering
BGCO hosts a variety of special events throughout the year to raise funds for our programs as well as community awareness about our organization and the programs and services we provide. This volunteer opportunity is on an on-call basis and requires a commitment of any where from a few days a year to attending every event, depending on the interests of the volunteer.
If we do not have the opportunities you are looking for, you might want to contact Volunteer Ottawa, your local volunteer centre, to be connected with an organization that will have current opportunities.
