Vintage Wings Canada Tour
Our Super Tech Engineers Program took an exciting outbound jaunt this February. S.T.E.P. is our new initiative that allows Club members to learn about the fundamentals of science through fun experiments, observation, and discussion. Children and youth are introduced to a variety of topics from Newtonian physics to chromatography, all in a hands-on and interactive way.

This particular day was a field trip to Vintage Wings, a unique facility that commemorates untold stories of aviation history by maintaining and actively flying their rare collection of vintage aircrafts of Canadian historical significance. Founded by former Cognos CEO Michael Potter, they continue to educate and inspire youth visitors. The S.T.E.P. Program was honored with an official welcome by Mr Potter.

Indoor Soccer Championship

The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa Police Athletic League (PAL) Indoor Soccer Championship 2010 took over the Superdome Sports Centre on Bearbrook Road on December 11th. Sixty children made up the five teams that played in the round robin tournament and four of those teams advanced to the semi-finals. Team Bayshore took the title this year, winning the championship game. It was a great afternoon that went into the evening, topped off with the presentation of awards and medals to the participating BGC Clubhouses.

Prior to the fun filled championship day, there were try-outs for the five participating teams. Once the team rosters were decided each team practiced weekly throughout the eight week, eight game schedule.

A fun indoor soccer skills competition is scheduled for early January to wrap up the league. The Boys and Girls Club staff will take on the kids in that game.

Now that the indoor soccer season has wrapped up, the PAL program will now focus on ball hockey for the winter season. The PAL program prides itself on positive competition and good sportsmanship. It is one of the only competitive sports league in the city that is entirely free. There is no cost to participants for transportation, uniforms, coaches, referees, and banquets. This valuable program is building leaders in our community and teaching leadership to Ottawa’s youth through social recreation. Once the snow melts and spring has sprung, youth will have a chance to participate in their sport of choice, and looking way ahead to summer the city wide basketball league will dominate the courts.

RCMP Reception

On September 29th, 2010, RCMP Commissioner William Elliott hosted volunteers and donors of the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa for a special reception and Musical Ride presentation. The evening was to recognize the incredible 10 year anniversary of the Capital City Chorus' involvement with the Club's summer camp - Camp Smitty. Over $500,000 in volunteer time and materials have been donated to Camp Smitty over this 10 year period - a community contribution well worth this celebration. The event was well attended, the Capital City Chorus put on a great show with a number of songs, and the Musical Ride did not disappoint.
