Finding his voice:
How Leaders 4 Life helped Nick step forward

When Nicholas Ologun first joined the Leaders 4 Life (L4L) program at BGC Ottawa, he was quiet, thoughtful and more comfortable listening than speaking. But something about the program sparked his curiosity. With every workshop, group project and challenge, Nick leaned in. Two years later, he’s not only a graduate, but also a scholarship recipient, a Carleton University commerce student and a shining example of what happens when youth are given the chance to lead.
“Working with my peers on events really showed me how important teamwork is,” said Nick. “Seeing everyone play their part made me realize that communication and collaboration will be crucial in my future.”
From learning to leading
L4L, thanks to the generous support of the Hazelview Cares Foundation and Rogers, helps high school students build skills they’ll carry for life. The program unfolds in two phases: first introducing fundamentals like communication, time management and planning, then moving into deeper topics such as mental health, activism and community development.
“We don’t just talk about leadership; we give youth the space to practice it.”
– Elietra Samuel, Mentorship Coordinator

Nick’s journey reflected that growth. By his second year, he stepped up to lead the Don McGahan Clubhouse’s community project. Blending his love for sports with his passion for giving back, Nick managed every detail of BGC Ottawa’s Senior’s Night at Mooney’s Bay. The event brought Members from all four clubhouses together for games, food and connection – a joyful celebration of what young leaders can achieve.
“Organizing that event taught me how essential communication is,” said Nick. “It also showed me the value of putting yourself out there. Skills don’t mean much unless you use them.”
Preparing for the future
Like all 82 youths who participated in L4L this year, Nick gained far more than workshop knowledge. From financial literacy to everyday time-management strategies, he was equipped for life beyond the clubhouse.
“Simple advice like ‘don’t overpack your schedule’ and ‘use a calendar’ really made a difference,” said Nick. Today, he uses those tools daily as he balances university coursework, athletics and personal goals.
In June, Nick received the Paul Conway Memorial Scholarship, a $4,000 award made possible through the generosity of donor Mike Wood. For Nick, it was more than financial support. “Receiving this award showed me that people believe in my vision,” he said. “It lifted a huge weight off my shoulders and allows me to focus on becoming an accountant.”
The bigger picture
Nick’s story is just one example of the impact L4L has on participants. This year, thanks to your support:
- 82 Members developed leadership and life skills.
- Participants strengthened their communication, workplace readiness and financial literacy.
- Every Grade 12 participant graduated high school.
- Young leaders gave back through community projects, from fundraising for the Ottawa Mission to hosting a community event and supporting intergenerational connection.
At the heart of it all are young people like Nick, who walk in with curiosity and walk out with confidence, leadership and a vision for the future.
Thank you for making it possible
Your support ensures that BGC Ottawa Members don’t just prepare for life after high school – they thrive in it. Because of you, young leaders like Nick discover their voices, build their skills and step into their futures with confidence.
As Nick put it best:
“The L4L program, and this scholarship, remind me that my hard work matters. And that means everything.”
Behind the scenes with Leaders 4 Life
What makes the L4L program unique?
According to Mentorship Coordinator and Program Lead Elietra, it’s the way participants are pushed to turn lessons into action. “In today’s world, we often talk about leadership, but we stop there,” she explained. “With L4L, youth don’t just learn concepts. They run events from start to finish, they plan, they problem-solve, and they see firsthand what it takes to bring people together.”
At each clubhouse, youth are tasked with designing and executing their own community project. Facilitators provide minimal direction; the decisions and responsibilities fall to the participants. That’s where the magic happens.
“You see the natural leaders emerge, of course,” said Elietra. “But you also see the quieter leaders – the ones making sure everyone is heard, that tasks get done, that the group succeeds as a team. Those moments are just as powerful.”
It’s this kind of learning – immersive, challenging and empowering – that makes L4L a life-changing experience for youth across Ottawa.
Fueling futures at the 2025 Western Winds Glamping Gala

This year’s Western Winds Glamping Gala was a shining example of community generosity and partnership. Despite the rain, more than 480 guests came together for an unforgettable night – sharing incredible food and drinks, enjoying live entertainment, and most importantly, making a lasting impact for BGC Ottawa youth.
Thanks to the remarkable support of our Presenting Sponsor, Mark Motors Group, along with generous donors, sponsors and guests, we raised an outstanding $620,000 in support of BGC Ottawa’s mission.
This event simply would not have been possible without the dedication and leadership of the Gala Committee, led by Michelle Taggart and Jeff Smith, whose tireless work helped bring the evening to life.

But beyond the glitz and glamour, this night was about something deeper: ensuring no child in our community goes hungry.
The evening’s focus was on nutrition and food security – ensuring every young person in our community has access to healthy after-school snacks, meals and programs that promote lifelong wellness. For many Members, these snacks are more than food; they’re the fuel that keeps them energized, focused and ready to thrive.

- $5,000 supports hands-on nutrition programs like cooking, baking, gardening and urban agriculture that give kids lifelong skills and strengthen communities for years to come.
Every dollar makes a difference. Every gift fuels a future.
Give today to ensure no child goes hungry and every Member has the nourishment they need to learn, grow and thrive.

BGC Ottawa Members live the NASCAR dream at Calabogie

This summer, a group of BGC Ottawa Members and their families had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the NASCAR Canada Series – Calabogie 150 Clash of the Titans at Calabogie Motorsport Park. The roar of the engines, the thrill of the track and the rush of being right in the middle of the action made it a weekend no one will ever forget.
VIPs for a weekend
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Jean-Claude (JC) Paille, owner of Paillé Racing and the No. 96 Paillé Racing Chevrolet, and the hospitality of Jason Gatelaro from NASCAR Canada, our families were welcomed as true insiders. JC donated 14 suite passes, giving our Members the best seats in the house – towering above the start/finish line in the tallest suite.
The surprises just kept coming:
- Meet-and-greets with drivers, including No. 96’s Marc-Antoine Camirand.
- Autographs, photos and even pit access.
- Racing shirts and gear for every child from the Paillé merchandise trailer.
- A VIP BBQ lunch with Ron Tomlinson and his crew.
- And the ultimate highlight – our Members joining drivers on the winner’s podium after the big race!

“It felt like a Make-a-Wish Day”
For many youths, this was their first-ever professional sporting event. As Sabrina Gouchie, Clubhouse Manager at BGC Ottawa, shared “It literally felt like a Make-a-Wish Day. The kids were treated like celebrities from start to finish, and by the end of the day they left not just as spectators, but as true racing fans.”
She added: “Walking into that VIP suite, seeing the cars up close, meeting the drivers – it was jaw-dropping for the kids. You could see them light up with excitement and pride. It showed them that they belong in those spaces, too.”
One Member summed it up best: “At the start of the day I didn’t know anything about racing. By the end – I had a favourite car and driver!”
Families felt the impact, too
Parents were just as moved by the experience:
“From start to finish, everything was so well organized and welcoming – even as casual fans, the event got us all feeling like lifelong enthusiasts!”
– The Chappell & Charbonneau-Tremblay Family
“It brought us closer together in such a meaningful way. We are deeply grateful for this unforgettable experience!”
– The Crete Family
Gratitude in the driver’s seat
This extraordinary opportunity showed the true power of generosity. What might have seemed like a simple donation of tickets turned into a memory that families will treasure for a lifetime.
From all of us at BGC Ottawa, thank you JC, Jason, Marc-Antoine, the Tomlinson Family and to everyone who made this experience possible. Your kindness created lasting joy, stronger community connections and unforgettable moments for our Members and families.
Community spirit in action
At BGC Ottawa, we believe that when a community comes together, incredible things happen. This summer, we saw just that – from swinging golf clubs and hitting home runs, to selling lemonade with unstoppable cheer, to even breaking a World Record on a StairMaster, our supporters showed up in creative, heartfelt and powerful ways. These events weren’t just about raising funds; they were about building brighter futures for the children and youth who call our Club their second home. Here’s a look at four unforgettable events that made a big impact.

Helkat Jaffer’s Guiness World Record
When life knocked him down, Helkat Jaffer decided to rise higher – one step at a time.
A proud BGC Ottawa alumnus and personal trainer, Helkat turned a serious injury into a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give back. After rupturing his Achilles tendon in 2023, he began writing his book The Power of Movement to channel his recovery. Along the way, he discovered the Guinness World Record for the most steps climbed on a StairMaster in 24 hours – and set his sights on breaking it.
On August 30 at noon, Helkat launched his 24-Hour StairMaster Guiness World Record Attempt at GoodLife Fitness in Orléans. Battling cramps, exhaustion and moments of doubt, he kept repeating to himself: “If you can take one step, take that step.”
That determination carried him to a stunning total of 111,285 steps in 24 hours, surpassing the previous record of 108,887. The achievement is now pending official Guinness confirmation, but one thing is already certain: his climb raised an incredible $7,000 (and counting!) to support BGC Ottawa youth programs.
For Helkat, the cause was deeply personal. “When we first came to Canada, my family didn’t have much. BGC Ottawa gave me opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise – a safe place to play, learn and grow. This was my way of paying it forward.”
He also hopes others see their own potential in his journey. “Don’t look at setbacks as the end. Look at them as an opportunity to change directions. The energy is there; it’s just waiting for you to use it.”
Adam Joiner, Chief Executive Officer of BGC Ottawa, shared his pride in Helkat’s achievement. “Helkat came to the Club as a young Member, and now he’s giving back to the community in a way that’s truly inspiring. To break a World Record while raising funds for the next generation of Members is incredible. He’s showing our youth that they can be whatever they want to be. The opportunities are limitless.”
To put his impact in perspective, his efforts could send five youths to Camp Smitty for 10 days, feed a Clubhouse for 14 weeks or cover training and tournaments for three basketball players on the Thunderbolts. Every step meant new opportunities for kids across Ottawa.
From the Club kid who once received his first bike from BGC Ottawa to a Guinness World Record Holder helping the next generation, Helkat has shown us that every step counts, especially when it’s taken for others.
Thank you, Helkat, for inspiring us all!

Capital Charms Charity Scramble
Sunshine, laughter and plenty of swings made the Capital Charms Charity Scramble an unforgettable day on the greens. This summer tradition is all about bringing family, friends and golf enthusiasts together for a day of fun with purpose. Thanks to the dedication of Richard Hintzen and his community of supporters, this year’s event teed up 100 golfers and four volunteers – raising over $3,000 to support free programs and safe spaces at BGC Ottawa.
Richard shared why this event is so close to his heart:
“I chose BGC Ottawa because it had a positive impact on my childhood. It provided a safe and supportive space where I could play sports, enjoy creative activities and build friendships. Through my experiences there, I developed teamwork and leadership skills that carried me through school and beyond.”
Royal LePage Team Realty & Royal LePage Performance Realty Annual Baseball Tournament
Bats cracked, gloves snapped, and the field buzzed with excitement as the Royal LePage Team Realty and Performance Realty crew came together for their annual summer baseball tournament. REALTORS®, staff, sponsors and friends left the office behind and stepped up to the plate for a great cause, raising $1,000 in support of BGC Ottawa programs.
Tournament lead Julie McLaughlin summed it up perfectly:
“Supporting BGC Ottawa is a natural fit. Their incredible work provides stability, mentorship and opportunity to young people who are our city’s future leaders. Hosting this tournament is our way of giving back, connecting with our community and making a meaningful impact where it matters most.”
Guppy Sharks Lemonade Stand
Sometimes the sweetest gestures come in small (but mighty!) packages. The Guppy Sharks, an all-star cheer team of energetic 7- and 8-year-olds, put their spirit into action with a lemonade stand at RONA. With big smiles and endless enthusiasm, these young changemakers raised over $1,000 to support BGC Ottawa’s programs.
The Guppy Sharks shared why they chose to support the Club:
“We chose to support BGC Ottawa because it helps local kids just like us get the chance to play sports and stay active in their communities!”
Together, these events raised nearly $15,000 to fuel brighter opportunities for Ottawa’s children and youth. Whether you’re golfing, swinging a bat, selling lemonade or climbing over 111,000 steps for a world record, every act of kindness helps build a stronger community and we couldn’t be more grateful.
Kicking barriers aside:
Building confidence through Girls-Only Soccer

Every week at the Don McGahan Clubhouse, the turf comes alive with the sound of running feet, laughter and encouragement. Girls aged 6–12 fill the space with energy and joy as they take part in BGC Ottawa’s Girls-Only Soccer program.
Not long ago, many of these same girls might have stayed on the sidelines. In mixed programs dominated by boys, their interest in the sport was often overshadowed by shyness, intimidation or the feeling that they didn’t belong.
That’s when staff, including Kassandra Marshall, now a Youth Development & Program Specialist, decided to act. With a vision to create a supportive environment, Kassandra and her team launched a dedicated girls-only time on the turf, free from the pressures and distractions that came with playing alongside boys.

Since then, what started with just a handful of participants has grown into a thriving weekly program that sometimes sees more than 20 girls on the field. Beyond learning the game, they’re building friendships, confidence and resilience. Many are even carrying those skills into co-ed soccer, showing the courage to claim their place.
“It’s such a kind, supportive space. They cheer each other on, help each other up and truly embody what sportsmanship should look like.” – Kassandra Marshall
“I’ve watched girls go from shyly standing still on the turf to running hard, leading their peers and mentoring younger players,” said Kassandra. That transformation reflects why she feels so passionate about the program. “I grew up playing soccer, and I know how much sports can shape a young person – not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Seeing these girls arrive excited to play every week reminds me why I love this work. It warms my heart to see the joy and confidence they’re finding here.”
Looking ahead, Kassandra hopes to expand the program to include older age groups and offer even more opportunities for girls to stay active and engaged. The long-term vision is to grow participation, strengthen leadership opportunities and ensure that every girl feels welcome in sport – whether on a girls-only team or in a co-ed game.
None of this would be possible without the generosity of donors. Because of you, what began as a small pilot has become a thriving program where girls discover their confidence on and off the field.
Every time a girl steps onto the turf with courage, your support is right there with her.

Together, we've achieved so much this year – let's finish strong.

As 2025 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on what an extraordinary year it has been for BGC Ottawa.
Thanks to the generosity of our entire community, including major donors, monthly supporters, community event organizers, sponsors and event guests, we’ve reached new heights in strengthening programs across the city.
Our two marquee events, the Morning Social and the Glamping Gala, stood out as milestones this year. Both not only surpassed their fundraising goals but also brought our mission to life in unforgettable ways. Beyond these successes, more community partners and groups are choosing BGC Ottawa as their charity of choice, helping us deepen our impact.
We are also heartened by the growing response to our monthly giving program. These steady contributions ensure that every child who walks through our doors can count on consistent care, mentorship and opportunity – day after day, month after month.
But the year is not over, and our work is far from done. Demand for our programs continues to rise, while government and foundation funding has not kept pace with the real needs of Ottawa’s children and families. To make matters more urgent, a postal strike is expected to disrupt traditional year-end giving, placing us at a critical moment.
A strong finish to 2025 will allow us to:
- Keep every Clubhouse door open after school for kids who need a safe, welcoming space.
- Provide nutritious snacks and meals to children who might otherwise go without.
- Hire and train youth workers and mentors who inspire possibility every day.
If you’re considering a year-end gift, giving online at www.bgcottawa.org/donate is the fastest and most reliable way to ensure your support reaches us in time.
Together, we can close the gap and step into 2026 ready to do even more, so that every child who counts on BGC Ottawa continues to thrive.
With heartfelt thanks,

Sylvie Madely
Chief Advancement Officer
