Ghdeer’s journey:
From BGC Ottawa Member to future healthcare leader
At BGC Ottawa, Ghdeer found more than after-school programs – she found a place to grow, lead and give back. A second home that helped shape her into the confident, compassionate young woman she is today. And it’s all thanks to the support of donors like you.

A Member since the age of seven, Ghdeer spent her childhood immersed in Club programs that helped her grow into a resilient, compassionate leader. This spring, she graduated from Immaculata High School – and credits BGC Ottawa for helping shape who she is today.
“There are people at the Club who have watched me grow up,” she said. “Being able to give back during high school meant everything to me.”
And give back she did. Ghdeer became a dedicated volunteer – supporting food security efforts, leading emotional wellness programs for kids, working with seniors and mentoring younger Members. These experiences built her confidence, empathy and leadership skills.

A turning point came through the Caring for Others focus program, where Ghdeer worked closely with youth and seniors. It was there she discovered her passion for service – and a future in healthcare.
Inspired by her mother’s strength and her own love of science, Ghdeer has set her sights on becoming a cardiovascular perfusionist: a medical professional who operates life-sustaining equipment during heart surgeries. “This path lets me help people in their most vulnerable moments,” she said. “It brings together everything I care about – science, compassion and teamwork.”
This fall, she begins her studies in Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa, working toward her goal of joining surgical teams in operating rooms. Along the way, she plans to mentor youth, volunteer in healthcare settings and raise awareness of this life-saving profession.
Growing up with financial challenges, Ghdeer learned the value of resourcefulness and perseverance early on. Those experiences didn’t hold her back – they became her motivation to push forward and give back. “BGC Ottawa gave me the space to grow and the confidence to believe in myself,” she said. “That support made all the difference.”
Today, we’re proud to celebrate Ghdeer’s journey – and congratulate her on receiving the Charles King Scholarship. Because of you, stories like hers are unfolding every day at BGC Ottawa. Your generosity is helping young people build brighter, more hopeful futures.
Stronger Together:
A morning of impact,
a future of possibility
On May 15, something extraordinary happened.

At our BGC Ottawa Morning Social | Stronger Together, hundreds of community champions gathered to support a bold, shared vision: a city where every child and youth belongs, has access to opportunity and is empowered to thrive.
Together, we raised an incredible $920,000+ to power BGC Ottawa’s barrier-free, life-changing programs, and that impact is already rippling across our Clubhouses and Camp Smitty.
We heard from three remarkable brothers – Moe, Ryan and Yousif: one a proud BGC Ottawa alum and university student, and two current Members. Their journey, marked by resilience, growth and leadership, showed us how the Club becomes more than a safe space; it becomes a springboard for success.

Then there was Precious, an inspiring young basketball player who trains at the Club to sharpen her skills, driven by her dream of playing professionally. Her determination lit up the room and reminded all of us of what’s possible when youth have a place to belong, believe and become.
We were also honoured to welcome BGC Ottawa alumni – Fahd Alhattab and Paul Renaud – now thriving in their careers. They spoke about the foundational skills, confidence and mentorship they gained through their time at the Club. Their stories are living proof that when we invest in youth, the returns are exponential – for individuals, families and our entire city.
And threaded through the event were three impact stories, a series of powerful videos that took us on a journey: Where we have been. Where we are. Where are we going.
These stories featured voices from every corner of the BGC Ottawa community – donors, staff, alumni, Members and families – sharing real experiences, real challenges and real hope. Their honesty, pride and vision for the future left a lasting impact on every person in the room.
But the story doesn’t stop there.
The morning was marked by bold acts of generosity, from extraordinary gifts made quietly and anonymously, to others who rose to the challenge in the moment, giving publicly and inspiring everyone in the room.
“My family and I discussed how we could make a meaningful difference, and supporting BGC Ottawa felt right. Hearing the stories of perseverance and potential made it clear – this is where our support could truly matter,” said Franklin Holtforster.
Franklin’s $100,000 gift inspired others, including his good friend John Sicard, who matched his generosity, doubling the momentum and showing just how contagious such kindness can be.
Why does this matter more than ever?
Across Ottawa, demand for our free, inclusive programs is rising. With the support of many donors who gave in the room, online or anonymously, we can meet that need.
From daily snacks and mental health support to homework help, mentorship and leadership training, BGC Ottawa empowers thousands of young people at no cost to families. This event wasn’t just about raising funds. It was about investing in potential, building community and committing to a future where no child is left behind.
You’re a vital part of this momentum.
Whether you joined us in the room or supported from afar, thank you. Your belief in our mission is helping shape brighter futures for kids across Ottawa.
Let’s keep building… together.

Where you'll find us:
- Local parks
Ambassadors are a consistent presence in local parks, creating opportunities for spontaneous and planned engagement. These spaces become hubs for outreach and connection. - Recreation centres, libraries and wading pools
Ambassadors are a familiar face at recreation centres, libraries and wading pools, where they connect with youth and families enjoying city spaces – offering friendly conversations, support and referrals to programs and services. - Movies in the park, community BBQs and local events
These popular seasonal events serve as ideal settings for Ambassadors to engage large groups of residents, promote services and gather youth voices in a relaxed and social environment.
Ambassadors are out seven days a week, engaging with the community during key evening hours (typically from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.). They bring energy and presence to public spaces, creating a sense of safety and belonging while connecting residents to programs and services.

Coming full circle:
Matt Singer and the return of adventure at Camp Smitty.

For Matt Singer, Camp Smitty isn’t just a place he works – it’s the heart of his full-time mission. As Senior Manager, Camp Smitty and Outdoor Education, Matt leads the camp year-round with the same dedication that once welcomed him as a 13-year-old Camper. It’s a legacy, a lifeline and a home that changed his life – and now, he’s paying it forward.
“I was 13 when I first came to Camp Smitty – unsure and feeling out of place,” Matt recalls. “But by the final campfire, I felt something shift. I belonged. It felt like home – and still does.”
Today, Matt helps create that same transformation for hundreds of young people each summer – encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones, connect with nature and discover who they truly are.

A camp like no other
For over 100 years, Camp Smitty has offered life-changing experiences to youth, especially those from urban or underserved communities. Each summer, more than 300 Campers arrive at its lakeside setting, greeted by a caring team.
“Imagine growing up never having left your block,” said Matt. “Then one day, you arrive at Camp Smitty – and the world opens up.”
Camp Smitty offers more than games and campfires. It’s a place where confidence grows, resilience is built and lifelong memories are made. Campers try new things, make lasting friends, and for many, experience the outdoors for the first time.
Back on the map: Out-tripping returns in 2025
After several years on pause due to budget constraints, Camp Smitty’s beloved out-tripping programs are back – and the energy is electric.
“These trips were always a highlight,” said Matt. “They push kids to dig deep, work as a team and realize they’re capable of more than they ever imagined.”
Two signature programs returned this summer:
- The One-Night Canoe Adventure: Campers paddle across the lake, cook over a fire and sleep under the stars – a first for many.
- The Leadership-in-Training (LIT) Algonquin Expedition: A three-day canoe trip through Algonquin Park where teen leaders gain skills in navigation, teamwork and survival.
“These programs are life-changing,” Matt adds. “They build leadership and self-reliance – and deepen kids’ connection with nature.”
Making it happen – thanks to generous support
Reviving out-tripping took more than enthusiasm – it needed investment. Thanks to a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous, it’s now a reality.
Their gift covered all one-time setup costs for equipment and safety gear, plus ongoing funding for staffing and transportation – ensuring the program runs sustainably.
“Camp gave me the chance to believe in myself,” said Matt. “Now I get to help hundreds of kids find that same belief – and thanks to this support, we’re giving them even more.”
A summer to remember
With Session One complete, the lake has echoed with laughter, campfires have lit the night sky and friendships have taken root.
Most exciting of all: out-tripping is back. Campers have paddled open waters, set up tents and discovered inner strength.
With Matt leading the charge and a community behind him, Camp Smitty continues its mission – helping youth thrive, belong and dream bigger than ever.
Together, we build a stronger community

At BGC Ottawa, community and family are at the heart of everything we do. Like so many local businesses, organizations and individuals across the city, we share a common goal: to create lasting, positive change – and to empower the next generation of leaders to do the same.
In this summer edition of Club Connect, we’re celebrating the power of coming together. We’re highlighting four incredible community events that not only brought people together for fun and connection, but also helped raise vital funds to support our free, life-changing programs for children and youth.
Thank you for being part of our journey – your support helps us make a real difference.

Walk to CTC
What began as a pandemic pastime has grown into a powerful annual tradition. For the second year in a row, Adam Coplan and a group of friends laced up their sneakers for the Walk to CTC, a unique fundraiser in support of BGC Ottawa’s Tkachuk’s Captains program.
A passionate Sens fan, Adam combined his love of walking and hockey by trekking from LeBreton Flats to Canadian Tire Centre ahead of the April 6 game against Columbus. With support from the Senators Community Foundation and the Sens Army, the group raised more than $7,800 for BGC Ottawa.
“Growing up, playing organized sports and spending time with my friends outside of school was critical in making my childhood the best possible experience it could be. I learned so many valuable skills and discovered so much about myself during that time in my life. It means a lot for my friends and I to be able to raise money for BGC Ottawa, because we know that it’s going to help so many kids be able to have similar experiences.
Taking a tour of the Tomlinson Family Foundation Clubhouse and seeing the direct impact of what these funds will do for the kids at BGC Ottawa was an incredible experience for us. We’re excited to watch BGC Ottawa continue to grow and provide youth in Ottawa with the positive experiences and relationships they deserve.”– Adam Coplan, avid Sens fan and BGC Ottawa supporter
Tomlinson Show & Shine
Rain or shine, Ottawa’s car community showed up in style for the 5th Annual Tomlinson Show & Shine – one of the city’s largest and most anticipated car shows.
From vintage classics to high-performance vehicles, the event featured an impressive lineup while rallying support for a great cause. Thanks to the generosity of attendees through the BBQ, 50/50 draw, raffle and kids’ zone, an outstanding $8,000 was raised in support of BGC Ottawa. The passion for cars and our community made this year’s Show & Shine another unforgettable success.
“The Tomlinson Show & Shine continues to be one of the most anticipated events of the year, and we are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from Tomlinson and the Ottawa car community. This event not only showcases an impressive passion for vehicles but also reflects a deep commitment to giving back.
Rain or shine, it’s a day our team looks forward to – filled with energy, generosity and community spirit. We are proud to be part of such a meaningful tradition and thank everyone who contributed to its continued success.” – Adam Joiner, Chief Executive Officer, BGC Ottawa
Generation Next with Atlético Ottawa
Atlético Ottawa, in partnership with Dymon Storage, recently welcomed 100 BGC Ottawa youth and staff to TD Place for an unforgettable game day experience.
For many, it was their first time attending a professional soccer match – and they loved every minute. From the excitement of the crowd to the action on the field, it was an afternoon to remember.
This event was part of a partnership celebrating the next generation of soccer talent while supporting BGC Ottawa. A special highlight was when our Chief Programs Officer, Medin Admasu, kicked off the game with the ceremonial coin toss. Thank you, Atlético Ottawa and Dymon Storage, for making this possible!
“Thank you so much for giving our BGC Members the wonderful opportunity to experience the Atlético game – it truly meant a lot to all of them. Watching professional soccer was an unforgettable experience that inspired and excited our Members, and we’re truly grateful for your generosity and support. Opportunities like this make a lasting impact, and we appreciate your commitment to our community.”
– Tim Boisvert, Ron Kolbus Clubhouse Manager
EllisDon Bonspiel
The EllisDon Corporation recently brought their community together for a day of curling, connection and giving back. Their annual bonspiel at the Rideau Curling Club was more than just a fun day on the ice – it raised more than $20,000 in support of BGC Ottawa.
Dozens of participants came out to play, cheer and show their support for local children and youth. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team led by Sarah Walker worked tirelessly to plan and execute this successful event. Thanks to their hard work, these funds will help us continue delivering life-changing programs to young people across Ottawa.
“EllisDon proudly stands behind BGC Ottawa because we believe in investing in the future of our community’s children. By supporting this local organization, we are helping to create a brighter tomorrow for the next generation.”
– Sarah Walker, Project Manager, EllisDon Corporation
Why your support matters now more
than ever
At BGC Ottawa, we believe every young person deserves a safe space, a caring mentor and a real shot at reaching their full potential. Thanks to our supporters, we’ve been able to keep showing up for kids across the city – even as the pressures mount.

But here’s the truth: government funding is not helping us meet the rising needs in our community. That means we are relying more and more on our community to help fill the gap.
Your support is not only important – it’s essential. It gives us the ability to keep vital programs running, expand to meet urgent needs and provide stability to the thousands of young people who count on us.
When you give, you’re doing more than donating. You’re filling the gap. You’re helping us fight for equity, amplify youth voices and ensure every kid has access to the support they deserve – no matter what’s happening around them.
This year, we’ve launched bold new outreach efforts – from Club Connect to our city-wide door-to-door campaign – to grow our base of monthly support.
If you’ve already given this year, thank you. If you’re still considering your next gift, we need you now. Your generosity will help us keep the doors open, the programs running and the hope alive.
With deepest gratitude,

Sylvie Madely
Chief Advancement Officer
Because of YOU, young people have a place to belong
Over 80% of our funding for Clubhouses and Camp Smitty comes from generous local donors like you. Your support is not just appreciated – it’s essential. When you give, you help provide a safe, supportive space for children and youth across Ottawa to belong, believe and achieve.

$1,700 opens the door to a life-changing year
That’s all it takes to provide one young person with a full year of programs, support and connection at our Clubhouses.
Government grants aren’t guaranteed
While we apply for federal and provincial support, these funds are never certain or consistent, and many this year did not come through as expected. That’s why your support matters more than ever – it keeps our doors open and our impact growing.
Thank you for being the difference.
Your support makes BGC Ottawa a safe and welcoming second home for kids who need it most.
