Club Connect
Spring 2025

A safe, inclusive space, made just for her.
In this edition of Club Connect, we shine a spotlight on GAL PALS and Sisterhood – two female-only programs designed to inspire, educate and empower young girls to become strong leaders, supportive friends and to feel confident in their own skin.
“When our female Members told us they needed a space where they felt comfortable, validated and empowered, we knew we had to create a program that was engaging and fun, but most importantly it had to be meaningful and impactful,” said Tomlinson Clubhouse Manager Sabrina Gouchie. “It had to give girls their power back. It had to give them a voice, build their confidence and self-esteem.”

I can be myself when I'm with the girls in this room.

GAL Pals and Sisterhood do just that. They are led by female staff – tremendous mentors and role models who genuinely care about our Members. Together, they work diligently to create a safe, inclusive space, help build self-esteem, develop resiliency, and form leadership skills that empower girls beyond their time in the program. Their goal is to prepare all participants for lifelong success.
It’s a great feeling to have people I can trust and share my problems with. Someone who gets me and is going through the same things that I am.

“Our Sisterhood programs are some of our most popular programs at the Clubhouse,” said Taggart Parkes Clubhouse Manager Tammy Laroque. “I have noticed shy Members become more engaged and expressive. I have also observed Members learning to get along and engage with others that they weren’t close with. The personal growth and development in a relatively short period of time has been remarkable.”

Programming touches on all four of BGC Ottawa’s Pillars of Programming, with conversations about health, personal hygiene, hair care, changing roles and responsibilities, fashion and the world around them. They learn new skills such as pottery and painting, take part in yoga, fitness classes and girls-only sports.
GAL Pals and Sisterhood go beyond temporary solutions by addressing the root causes that limit girls’ participation and development, particularly those from priority neighbourhoods, low-income families, and marginalized communities.
Getting the opportunity to learn how to properly care for my hair and braid it, made me feel good about myself.

“Through these programs, we can be proactive and can intervene at the right moment in their lives to ensure they have the tools for success,” said Sabrina. “That’s why making these programs special, giving them a reason to visit the Clubhouse regularly, and providing them with a safe space to celebrate who they are is so important.”
With the successful roll-out and impact of GAL Pals and Sisterhood, we are working hard to bring the programs to all four clubhouses. With your support, our goal is to offer the program two times per week, providing consistent, empowering opportunities for girls to engage in personal growth. The program will also include out-trips to participate in special community events and activities in the broader Ottawa community.
By fostering safe, inclusive and empowering environments, we will continue to bridge the equity gap, helping girls grow into confident leaders ready to make a positive impact.
Thanks to you, we can save lives.
For many children and youth, BGC Ottawa is a home away from home. It’s their safe place, with adults who are there for them no matter what challenge they are facing.
Inside the walls of our Clubhouses, we see kids that don’t know how to connect with or communicate with others, because of years of social isolation. We see kids who are years behind in school and have no chance of keeping up. And depression, social anxiety, suicidal thoughts and more are all rapidly rising.

Right now, youth mental health conditions are rising at alarming rates.
Services like BGC Ottawa are the key to providing community mental health support for youth. And your kindness and generosity, now and in the years ahead, will ensure that whenever a child enters our Clubs or attends one of our life-changing programs, they will find a safe, supportive place, with people they can trust to help them.
No one has made it through life without someone else’s help.

As food insecurity continues to raise in communities across Ottawa, delivering our after-school snack program has become even more important.
Often, Members walk through our doors exhausted and hungry, and the first question out of their mouths is “What’s for snack?”
Kids can’t learn when their stomachs are rumbling with hunger pains. They can’t keep up in school and they often start to act out with behaviour problems.

But thanks to your generous support – and incredible volunteers like Samar Tabbara – we feed hungry minds. We guarantee that our Members will have the fuel they need to complete their homework and enjoy our programs to their fullest extent.
“I really enjoy working at the Clubhouse,” said Samar. “I feel at home. All the volunteers and staff love what they are doing. They are passionate about what they do and want to make a difference in the lives of many. I enjoy leading and participating in a lot of activities around the Clubhouse – but cooking, especially pizza, makes both the kids and me happy. I’m grateful to be part of the team, help fill hungry tummies, and to be a community builder.”

We all have the power to make our community a better place.
Community – and family – is at the heart is everything we do, just like many local businesses, organizations and individuals throughout Ottawa. Not only do we all want to make a positive impact, but together, we are invested in the next generation of community leaders.
In this edition of Club Connect, we look back on four fun-filled community events that have helped raise much-needed funds for our free programming this year.

Brady's Skate for Kids
Ottawa Senators Captain Brady Tkachuk, and his wife Emma, had Jan. 28 circled on their calendar – and so did many of our Members! Together, they laced up their skates and spent an afternoon skating on the Rink of Dreams at Ottawa City Hall. We think it was the perfect setting; many dreams came true that day.
With the generous support of their sponsors, the event generated $32,500 for BGC Ottawa!
Days like today remind us how powerful our community is when we do things like this together. You can feel the impact that it has, not just on the kids, but on everyone involved.
– Brady Tkachuck, Ottawa Senators Captain
The fans always show us support, so it’s nice to give back. When your Captain’s got such a great cause that he supports, you want to have his back, too. It's awesome that all the guys came out.
– Jake Sanderson, Ottawa Senators defenceman
Stantec 2025
Stantec, a proud supporter of Camp Smitty, once again held its annual hockey tournament. The event brought together 50 teams to compete at the Bell Sensplex from Feb. 4 to 6. Teams featured hockey enthusiasts, including local NHL Alumni, community supporters and corporate sponsors. An important fundraising event for BGC Ottawa, Stantec has helped ensure children and youth can experience nature and so much more at Camp Smitty for more than two decades.
While the final fundraising total is still being tallied, last year’s event raised more than $70,000, and early indications suggest another outstanding result!
As much as it’s a fun and competitive way to bring the Ottawa business community together, the impact this hockey tournament has is why we do it year after year. We love to give back to the community we live in, and we are happy to support BGC Ottawa.

289 to Zero: Holy Trinity Catholic High School
After tragically losing a former classmate to gun violence, students at Holy Trinity Catholic High School launched 289 to Zero – a campaign to raise awareness surrounding gun violence and to help foster safer communities. Students sell bracelets and hoodies, and every dollar raised goes directly to BGC Ottawa to help provide safe spaces, mentorship and opportunities for young people to stay on a positive path.
The Social Entrepreneur Program inspires students to become leaders and entrepreneurs, working collaboratively towards a shared vision. Through their passion and determination, the program encourages students to recognize their ability to create meaningful change in their communities. As an educator, my goal is to nurture qualities in students that empower them to be responsible citizens and advocate positive transformation in the world. 289 to Zero embodies this mission.
– Carolyn Hopewell, Teacher
Garneau Catholic High School’s Sports-O-Thon
Students from Garneau Catholic High School stepped up their game with an exciting Sports-O-Thon – an event that showcased their creativity in fundraising, determination, sportsmanship and school spirit. Together, they planned a friendly circuit, which included several sports that highlighted teamwork, enthusiasm and energy.
They raised more than $5,500 for BGC Ottawa with the help of their community, teachers, family, friends and Myers Automotive Group – talk about teamwork!
To see young people support their peers, and the community, is special. But to go above and beyond, like the students did at Garneau, is remarkable. They are leading the way and showing others why it’s important to invest in the next generation of community leaders.

This milestone means that renovations to SOM Hall are officially moving forward. The construction committee – led by Steve Barkhouse of Amsted Design-Build – has met, and plans are underway to break ground this fall after the camp season wraps up. By Summer 2026, Campers will step into a fully revitalized Hall – a space that will serve as the heart of camp programming, where they will gather, learn, create and build lifelong friendships.
Beyond the renovation, the success of this campaign also means that Camp Smitty’s operations will be supported. These funds will help ensure that Camp remains accessible to as many children and youth as possible, continuing to provide transformative experiences regardless of financial circumstances.
Camp Smitty offers a unique combination of dedicated and experienced staff, diverse participants and a commitment to providing life-changing opportunities to young people. When you bring these things together, the results are astonishing and something we are incredibly proud of.
– Matt Singer, Senior Manager, Camp Smitty and Outdoor Education
We are deeply grateful to every donor who contributed to this campaign. Your support has made this project a reality and strengthened Camp Smitty’s legacy for the future. Because of you, hundreds of children and youth will continue to experience the magic of Camp each summer.
A special thank you for believing in the power of camp to the Smith-Homestead Foundation, St. Brigid’s Camp, Brian Meloche and family, Dorothy Speak and Paul LaBarge, Raymond, Charles and Douglas Holtforster, the Crabtree Foundation and Camp Minwassin/Smitty Alumni.

Mentor, leader, foster parent:
How Sabrina is changing lives
At BGC Ottawa we pride ourselves on surrounding our Campers, Members and their families with incredible people – leaders, mentors, role models, and most importantly, people they can rely on and trust.

Sabrina Gouchie is one of those people. Her BGC Ottawa journey started at Camp Smitty where she was a Senior Camp Counsellor, and today you’ll find her at the Tomlinson Family Foundation Clubhouse as its Clubhouse Manager.
“When I joined the Camp Smitty team the summer of 2014, I instantly became part of a family. I formed bonds with the other staff, volunteers and Campers almost immediately,” said Sabrina. “Everyone was stoked to be there; we poured our hearts into creating meaningful programs and having fun. It’s a magical place.”

For the next nine years, she wore various hats at residential care facilities, group homes, the humane society and at the Club’s satellite locations, making the greatest impact at our Rochester Heights location. Working with youth is her forte. She has an ability to see kids for who they are, identify those who are most at risk, make them comfortable, open up and help them to see their potential.
“I was a strong advocate for keeping the doors open at our Rochester Heights location. It’s a community that needs BGC Ottawa,” said Sabrina. “The community is poverty stricken, food insecurity is high, and most families can’t provide their kids with the necessities. It’s difficult to see, but the impact of our programs and services – not to mention the need – was 10-times greater than other communities that I had been part of. The connection I had with those kids and their families, there’s no comparison. I know I made a positive impact on that community – on kids who needed a role model and mentor in their lives who they could rely on and trust. They have a place in my heart, and I hope I do in theirs.”
What most people don’t know about Sabrina is that she’s opened her heart, and her home, to numerous youths as a foster parent, all of whom have been young girls. She formed such a wonderful connection with a young person that she adopted them, making them part of her family forever.
She truly lives and breathes the Club’s values in every aspect of her life and is determined to make an immediate impact on those who need her guidance and support.
“I love the challenge to think outside of the box to create impactful programs for youth,” said Sabrina. “As a non-profit, we have limitations, but that only motivates me more when it comes to creativity and flexibility to achieve the desired impact and results.”
The connections and impact Sabrina has made over the past 11 years is remarkable. She is the kind of person you want spending time with your child, helping them learn, grow and thrive. She is the reason many young people make better decisions in our community, do well in school and become role models for our younger Members.
